Microsoft Agent Framework 1.0
Microsoft
Abstract
Released on 30 September 2026, consolidating Microsoft's previously separate Semantic Kernel and AutoGen agent stacks into a single open-source SDK spanning .NET and Python. Multi-agent orchestration is decomposed into explicit patterns — sequential, concurrent, group chat, handoff, and a Magentic-based manager-team mode. At the protocol layer it natively supports both A2A (agent-to-agent) and MCP (agent-to-tool) as complementary rather than competing paths. Engineering additions include checkpointing and resumption, so long-running tasks can continue after interruption and interrupted sessions can be exported for human takeover. Reported significance: it consolidates a fragmented orchestration landscape, and its dual A2A+MCP support signals that agent interoperability protocols are converging on a stable shape.
